DeSoto has always been a city with great potential. In order for DeSoto to capitalize on its opportunities, it needs strong leadership, and we believe that it had that in Mayor Rachel Proctor.
In a recent Dallas Morning News article, they strongly recommend voters return her to office over challenger Trace Henderson.
Proctor, 41, has been deeply involved in building DeSoto’s future for years. She also has a clear vision and a plan for developing its core, promoting homeownership and addressing crime.
She correctly identifies the need to increase the number of small businesses in DeSoto, especially amenity businesses like restaurants and entertainment options that would help enliven DeSoto’s central corridor. Her work in this area on the Hampton Road Redevelopment Project is a strong start that we think will help the city create a district that promotes civic life, small businesses and culture.
Public safety concerns are also something Proctor is working to address in collaboration with police and city administrators. We agree that the development of a High Intensity Crime Reduction Unit that is getting an active police presence into high crime areas is the right strategy.
Meanwhile, her support of a down payment assistance program to promote single-family homeownership strikes us as the correct path for DeSoto.
Henderson’s primary concern appears to be the growth of multifamily housing in DeSoto. But he seemed to confuse the down payment assistance program aimed at single-family homeowners with an increase in multifamily dwellings.
Proctor wrote in our questionnaire that the city’s goal is “to support the creation of as many homeowners as possible because data shows homeownership plays an important role in building strong, stable communities.”
